As soon as the clocks go back and the heating goes on, I see the same thing in clinic every year: clients arriving with blocked noses, heavy heads, puffy eyes and that general run-down feeling that seems to hang around from October until spring. If you feel like you’re permanently on the edge of a cold at this time of year, you’re not imagining it, and your lymphatic system may have more to do with it than you think.
Why Autumn Leaves So Many of Us Feeling Congested
Your lymphatic system is your body’s drainage and defence network. It clears excess fluid and waste from your tissues and carries immune cells to where they’re needed. There’s a particularly busy cluster of lymph nodes around your head and neck, which is why your glands can feel tender when you’re fighting something off.
In the colder months, a few things work against it:
π¬οΈ Cold air and central heating β Moving between the two dries out and irritates the lining of your nose and sinuses.
ποΈ Moving less β Lymph has no pump of its own. It relies on muscle movement and breathing, so darker evenings on the sofa mean slower flow.
π§ Drinking less water β We naturally reach for the water bottle less when it’s cold, and lymph needs fluid to move well.
π€§ More bugs around β Your immune system is working harder, and the head and neck nodes are right in the middle of that.
The result? Fluid can sit around the face and sinuses, leaving you feeling stuffy, puffy around the eyes and cheeks, and heavy-headed, especially first thing in the morning.
How Lymphatic Drainage Can Help
Lymphatic drainage uses gentle, rhythmic movements to encourage fluid towards the lymph nodes so the body can process it. When we work on the face, neck and chest, many clients describe feeling clearer and lighter straight afterwards. It can help to:
β¨ Ease that blocked, pressured feeling around the sinuses
β¨ Reduce puffiness around the eyes and cheeks
β¨ Relax tension in the jaw, neck and shoulders
β¨ Leave you feeling calmer and more rested
It isn’t a replacement for medical care. If you have a fever, a sinus infection that won’t clear, or any symptoms that worry you, please speak to your GP first. But as part of looking after yourself through the colder months, it can make a real difference to how you feel.
Our Two Autumn Treatments
This season we’ve created two treatments especially for this time of year. Both are 80 minutes and include red light therapy within your treatment time.
The Decongestive Package β Β£160 (usually Β£220)
A full body lymphatic drainage combined with facial decongestive therapy, focused on the face, sinuses and neck to help you breathe and feel clearer. Buccal work (gentle drainage from inside the mouth) can be included if you’d like it, but it’s entirely optional.
Lung & Let Go β Β£180 (usually Β£245)
A full body lymphatic drainage combined with a short series of acupuncture points chosen to support the lungs and breathing. This mini autumn protocol was created with our acupuncturist, and we’ll always adapt it to you, or leave it out if acupuncture isn’t right for you on the day.
Both offers run until the end of November.
Simple Ways to Keep Things Flowing at Home
Between treatments, there’s plenty you can do to support your lymphatic system:
π§ Keep drinking water β Warm water, herbal teas and broths all count.
π¨ Breathe deeply β Slow belly breaths act like a pump for the lymph in your chest. A few minutes morning and evening is enough.
πΆββοΈ Keep moving β A brisk walk, gentle stretching or a few minutes on a rebounder all help.
π Try gentle self-massage β Light strokes down the sides of your neck towards your collarbones can help the face and head drain.
β¨οΈ Use steam β A warm shower or a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head can soothe dry, irritated sinuses.
π΄ Prioritise sleep β Your body does a lot of its repair work overnight.
